Worship

“Welcome to our living room. You can take a seat, it’s always free.”  – DC Talk*

This is where I put my recent worship projects. Spend some time enjoying your favorite songs, and let me know if there are any songs you would like to worship along with. I’ll record them as soon as I’m able.

As always, thank you for listening.

Beautiful Things – Gungor

One of my favorite songs to play in DADGAD, the walking lines over chords are just fun to work with. Additionally, I am sometimes able to talk my wife into coming in and doing the bridge, and I love singing with her, so this one gets played a lot because it makes her smile.

Closer – Lifepoint Worship

My violin player, the absolute sweetheart that she is, threatened offered to kill me for keeping a song in B when I can sing it in C. So I did it in C. My bass player and piano player secretly thanked my violin player, thinking I wouldn’t notice. I don’t know who they think I am, but…

Also, I snapped a string on my acoustic last night, so I strung up my old Epiphone Les Paul (a ’56 Goldtop remake, my first REAL electric that I bought, signed by the original David Crowder*Band because I’m a nerd), and had a little fun holding her again. Dumb fact: I name my guitars. Fun fact: I’m not telling you her name. That’s between me and her.

I can’t believe you’re still reading. Stop reading. Worship a little bit with me.

Tired Heart – Bleach

When I was touring, I came home late one evening and had to run some equipment out to a friend’s house. I had it loaded in the back of my car and had an old iPod playing some music I’d forgotten about. The original version of this song came on, and I was just slow jamming with the words, trying to worship along as I was driving. So I’m telling God that I’m trying to stay focused on worshipping but I’m getting excited about the fame and notoriety we’ve gained recently. I’m worried about chasing fame and pride. I need to stay close to my roots, but I need to share His message… “so I’ll sing songs of life, for all these broken hearts just like mine…”

And He replies “Peace, be still: I am with You…” and I’m trying to let Him take my tired heart, I’m trying so hard to let Him have control, and we sing “I’m so sorry I haven’t come home.” I started to tear up a bit. I fought for it. I tried to make it. But as soon as we got to “but I’m coming home soon,” I lost it. It was such a powerful piece at the right moment for me. I had to learn the song.

*You can hear them say this in the intro to “What If I Stumble,” on the “Welcome To the Freakshow” live album. They did that song right after their bombastic hit “Jesus Is Just Alright” so there was a strong transition between the feel of the two songs. After the huge end of the previous song, an acoustic guitar plucks a chord and picks a little, which felt a little jarring. But like a beat poet in his element, Kevin Max calmly says “Welcome to our living room,” and instantly there’s a soft intimacy to the moment. It’s a phenomenal phrase to switch the mood. “You can take a seat, it’s always free.” That’s what I want when you find this page. Welcome to my living room. Stay a while. I’ll make you something to drink. You can take a seat here. My time for you is always free.
